If you spend any time studying finance or investing, you know what a contrarian is. It’s the person who looks at where the entire stampede is running, turns around, and walks the exact opposite direction. They make their money by betting against the consensusWhen I sat down with my recent Flipped Story guest, Jesse Wroblewski, it hit me almost immediately: Jesse is the marketing equivalent of a high-stakes contrarian.

Jesse is the founder of Decommoditized and the mastermind behind the Marketing for Supervillains series. He’s a marketer by trade, but if you really press the two of us, we’d both agree that he’s a deep thinker who has reached a massive inflection point with how modern brands interact with audiences.

He just released Volume 2 of Marketing for Supervillains (which focuses heavily on the tactical “how,” while Volume 1 established the “why”). We had an absolute blast diving into what “marketing villainy” actually means, but the conversation quickly unlocked some massive, overarching themes for anyone trying to build a brand today.

My Take: Flipping the Narrative in a World of Choice

We spent a ton of time focusing on how companies can flip their positioning and achieve true brand differentiation in incredibly crowded markets.

The reality of modern marketing is that we are living in a world of absolute abundance and fragmentation. There is a dangerous corporate temptation for challenger brands to look at the multi-billion-dollar market leader and say, “I want to look like those guys.” But as Jesse points out, trying to copy the giant when you are under-resourced is a death sentence. You can’t out-SEO or out-spend them. You have to out-smart them.

Ultimately, Jesse’s core philosophy forces us to flip the script entirely: The market isn’t something you just passively participate in – it’s something you program.

The Carnival Sideshow

Oh, and for the record, we also took a fascinating detour into the world of vintage carnival marketing. It turns out that history’s original “group of misfits” actually invented things like qualifying leads and social proof long before digital marketing existed. I’ll make you tune into the full episode to hear the backstory on that one—it’s worth the price of admission alone!
