Building something real is rarely a linear journey. More often than not, it is a series of unexpected headwinds, timing traps, and long, grinding periods where the finish line keeps moving.
On this episode of The Flipped Story, host David Gadarian sits down with Hadley Nightingale, CEO of New Zealand Property Buyers. Today, Hadley runs a fully remote team of 13 people operating across New Zealand and Southeast Asia. But looking at his current operation without knowing his story misses the core lesson: Hadley’s authority wasn’t built during the easy years—it was forged across decades of persistent setbacks, bad timing, and navigating external systems he couldn’t control.
The 2008 Shockwave and the Outback Reset
At just 19 years old, right before the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Hadley took on a massive mortgage during an era when banks were lending freely. Combine that debt with a handshake cropping deal that completely collapsed, and he was financially wiped out before his twenties even truly began.
Rather than taking on a victim mentality, Hadley packed up and headed to the Australian Outback. He spent his entire twenties driving 200-ton road trains and running mining crews—working grueling hours for a single purpose: to pay off the mistake and get back to zero.
That decade in the desert physically beat a core principle into him: No one is coming to save you.
Evolving Through Mentors and Guidance
When Hadley returned to New Zealand in 2016 to restart, he realized that raw hard work wasn’t enough on its own. During his long hours in the truck cab, he had consumed hours of audiobooks and personal development, realizing that to change his outcomes, he had to change his approach.
Instead of relying solely on the classic “Kiwi do-it-yourself” attitude that got him burned early on, Hadley actively sought out mentors, property coaches, and advisors. By bringing experienced guides into his corner, he shifted from hopeful guessing to strategic execution—learning how to buy well regardless of whether the market goes up, down, or sideways.
Hadley’s Flipped Story Recipe – The 8-Year Legal Drag and the Ultimate Mindset Flip
Perhaps the longest headwind Hadley faced wasn’t in business, but in his personal life. For eight years, he found himself dragged through the family court system. For the first three and a half years, he made the common mistake of putting his life and business ambitions on pause, waiting for the system to resolve itself.
The turning point came when he realized that waiting for an external bureaucracy to finish was choking his potential. He flipped his narrative:
“Focus on what you can control, and don’t worry about the rest because the rest sorts itself out… I couldn’t keep putting my life on hold thinking ‘once this happens in the court, then I’ll be able to do this.’ You have to focus on what you can do to make sure your life continues while the external stuff boils away on the side.”
Once Hadley uncoupled his daily progress from the external chaos, he launched New Zealand Property Buyers in 2020 during global lockdowns and built the remote, 13-person team he leads today.
