Sometimes the turning point in a career isn’t a gradual realization. It’s an “oh shit” moment that arrives out of nowhere on a Sunday night.

For Drew Donaldson, Founder & CEO of Automata Intelligentsia, that moment landed during the Super Bowl. Sitting on his couch, he watched a GoDaddy commercial showing an AI tool generating a functional website in seconds. At the time, web development accounted for thirty percent of his agency’s revenue. Drew didn’t see a neat tech demo; he felt an existential wave crashing in. He knew right then that the traditional marketing agency playbook was toast, and a massive wave of disruption was coming for knowledge workers everywhere.

Instead of riding a sinking model into the ground, Drew made a hard pivot. He systematically wound down his traditional agency to build Automata Intelligentsia—a firm dedicated to helping growth-stage organizations flip with AI rather than get flattened by it.

But first, before he made this Flipped AI move he spent a week in shock.  And the truth, it took him over a month to make the pivot when faced with what he saw was a new reality – this didn’t happen overnight, and I think there was a degree of honestly that every business facing the AI tsunami can appreciate.

As a professional marketer, this part of our conversation hit particularly close to home – and we had a few good laughs around this, with Drew even claiming to have tapped into my inner marketing brain!  The agency world has spent decades obscuring simple mechanics behind complex retainer packages. But as Drew pointed out, shifting away from subjective client grading, where your work is evaluated based on whether someone’s spouse “likes the vibe” to binary, objective engineering is deeply liberating. When you build systems that either work or don’t, the value is undeniable.

A People First Flipped AI for Business Approach

Where Drew’s perspective truly flips the script is in how we approach technology. The prevailing corporate narrative around automation is almost entirely extractive: How many heads can we cut to save a buck? Drew completely rejects that premise. He builds enablement tools, not disablement tools, stepping into companies to eliminate the soul-crushing, error-prone data mechanics that drain human capacity.  My own POV on this – Drew and his company are way ahead of the curve here, and as the AI universe starts to stabilize, more and more businesses are going to come to the same conclusion.

We also waded into the practical realities of modern AI dialogue, from why most business leaders struggle with prompting (treating an MIT-level intern like a basic search bar) to why asking AI how to prompt itself is the ultimate operational leverage.

This episode isn’t about replacing human agency with cheaper algorithms. It’s about how thoughtful leaders navigate massive market shifts, build sustainable systems, and craft their own flipped AI story in an age of constant disruption.
