In our latest episode of The Flipped Story, I sat down with Jon Goehring, founder of StoryTrust Media. Jon is a Newhouse-trained broadcast journalist who mastered the “clinical precision” of traditional media, only to realize that in the digital age, perfection is actually a barrier to connection.

Jon is currently in the middle of a fascinating flip: moving from the safety of the broadcast booth to the “eat what you hunt” grit of entrepreneurship. And along the way, he’s discovered the secret to Media 2.0.

The Death of the “Broadcast Pedestal”

The transition from Media 1.0 to 2.0 isn’t just a technical shift from radio to podcasts; it’s a psychological one.

In Media 1.0, authority was granted by the institution. If you were behind the mic at a major station, people listened. In Media 2.0, authority is earned through resonance. Jon pointed out something that hit me: we’ve moved into an era where “perfection” feels like a lie. When we hear a voice that is too polished or a narrative that is too clean, our “AI Slop” detectors go off. We don’t want the announcer; we want the human.

Making Trust Deposits

The core of our conversation centered on a concept Jon calls Trust Deposits. In a world filled with deepfakes and automated noise, trust has become a scarce resource. You can’t just demand it; you have to bank it over time.

As Jon noted around the 15-minute mark of our chat, every time you show up authentically—filler words, stumbles, and all—you are making a deposit into the relationship with your listener.

“Trust is harder to build today than it was 15 years ago… because we are being bombarded. You have to show people that there is a real person on the other end of that signal.”

When you help someone solve a problem or share a piece of the “messy middle” of your journey, you’re building a balance. And in a “you eat what you hunt” economy, that balance is the only thing that ensures you’ll be invited back to the table tomorrow.
